FIRE
RISK ASSESSMENTS
|
 |
Legislation
places a duty of care upon employers (and other people) to ensure
the Health, Safety and Welfare of employees and other people who may
be affected by the work activity. The thrust of current legislation
is to provide a proactive approach through the vehicle of risk assessment.
|
| Whilst
such a proactive approach to Health and Safety has many positive advantages
it does place considerable responsibility upon employers and those
having control of premises. |
| Employers
are now required by law to formally assess the risk of fire to their
employees. Where there are 5 or more employees this risk assessment
must be recorded. Legislative changes effective from December 1999
require a formal fire risk assessment even where premises hold a Fire
Certificate. It is essential that the person carrying out the risk
assessment is competent to do
so. |
| A
failure to comply with Fire Regulations which places one or more employees
at risk in case of fire, is in itself, a criminal offence. A professional
and independent fire risk assessment will reduce the risk in your
premises and will assist in providing legal evidence that you have
taken all reasonable precautions and exercised all due diligence with
regard to fire safety issues. |
|
| Notwithstanding
the legal requirements have you considered the potential risk to your
business from fire? |
